FAS causes stunted growth as well as poor coordination and movement.
Permanant Growth Stunt
Children with FAS have a permanant growth stunt. This means they will always be underdeveloped from the time they are a fetus till their very last breath. They will always be smaller and less functional that the average individual. Their small size makes them appear abnormal and different from other children their age.
Lack of Coordination and Awkward Movement
Since the effects of FAS messes with the cerebullum in the brain, the coordination and movement of an FAS child is altered. They often have difficulty keeping their balence even compared to other children their age. Due to their poor motor skills their movements tend to be slow and awkward.
Less Efficient Structures
FAS babies grow differently. They do not develope as quickly as healthy babies do. They often lack certain features such as the normal creases on their palm. Without these various aspect, their range of movement is limited. The image on the left is of a normal baby palm compared to one of an FAS baby. The child with FAS has limited hand movements due to its single simian crease. This child will have difficulty touching his or her thumb to the littlest finger. The normal child, on the other hand, will have a larger variety of hang movements.
